Okay so it's mega early to even be considering this, but I was wondering what the shift patterns might be like. Given that there are likely to be 5 teams and 15 shifts shared evenly between them (each team having one early, one late and one night shift), will they run something like this?

My MS Paint skills are fantastic 8-)

Well my shifts last year were...

Thursday afternoon.
Saturday morning.
Sunday night.

That will give you an idea but not the best as i expect shift patterns won't be the same as last year.

Cool. That fits with my little sketch. It's the simplest way or organising it so I'd assume if it ain't broke, they won't fix it.

mine were wednesday night, friday afternoon and sunday morning

Thanks baggy, that fits too. And in terms of swapping shifts, do you know how easy it might be? I mean, we're still talking 5 months away and things can and probably will change, but based on your experience..?

bags666 posted this 29 March 2010

you cant change shifts unless you are asked to

BustaLinx posted this 29 March 2010

Ah really? It says on the site; '# You can apply to swap any shift you are allocated via your shift supervisor.'

But fair play if you can't.

hmm ok..i've known anyone do it but you can ask but they prefer if you didnt

Actually, we do allow volunteers to swap shifts with another volunteer, however experience has proven that it is often very difficult to find someone else who is willing to swap one of their shifts for one of yours. Plus it is important that all volunteers are given adequate time off between shifts to recuperate e.g. you can't swap a shift if it means that you / they will end up doing a double shift.

Thanks Tavis, that's what I was thinking.

This sounds really good! This is my first time as a CAT, and i'm at Reading, so Anyone know if they allow you to choose double shifts or is that strictly not allowed? Also i'm wondering how shifts are selected for people- do you get to choose or are they allocated? and are you allowed to mention that there are particular show's you'd like to see so they might not make you work then? for example this year i am really really keen to see Sunday's events, and also fridays if i get the chance! Thanks for the advice :-)

you cant do double shifts and you chose the shift pattern that fits round the bands...you do early 8-4 late 4-midnight night midnight-8....my shifts last year was weds night fri night and sun early....the shift patterns are set

I was in Brown, slightly boring (but not as bad as white!) my mate did purple and had quite an experience on the sunday night. What campsite were you working then?

weirdnrare posted this 03 April 2010

I was in yellow, I must say it was an interesting experience on the Sunday night!

I was in Purple Sunday night. I enjoyed it to be honest but then I am slightly mad!!

Do you generally move around different campsite points then or do u stick to one when you do your shift? And also, do you do your shifts with a few other people, or is it quite independant? Cos im sure the night shift would get pretty lonely and hard if lots of drunks walking around everywhere? haha :)

Morton39 posted this 04 April 2010

Tend to be a group of you per campsite and you are paired up, never alone.

matt1015 posted this 04 April 2010

you stick to the one campsite for the 3 shifts but you are never on your own. I think there were at least 12 people in Purple on the shift pattern I was on and most the time you go around in pairs or threes. I always found if there was any situation that you weren't happy with in terms of drunken people the best thing to do was walk away and have a word with the security guards as they seem to like dealing with it!! Although for the most part the drunk people are harmless enough and they're quiet amusing. :)

Sometimes you may be asked to relocate to another campsite during your shift, this can be due to a number of reasons, helping the public to move their tents if they have camped where they shouldn't be being the main one, the more CATs we have to hand on these occasions is essential to relocate campers as quickly as possible with minimal fuss.

CATs always walk round in groups of two to four size, depending on the area you are working. Never ever wander off on your own and even in pairs you must report back to your area supervisor on duty every two hours so they know you are ok.
