so who else is working leeds?
it's my first time as a CAT and it looks like i'm going on my own so would be nice to get to know some of you before the fest :)

post a little bit about yourself, where you're from, what bands you're most looking forward to, if you've been before etc..

I'm Gemma, 18 from Cheshire and i'm in my first year studying Events Management at Sheffield Hallam University.
I went to Leeds for the first time last year and i also love Glastonbury Festival. First time not going to glasto for 3 years due to lack of funds so i'm looking for an extra amazing time at leeds to make up for it!
i'm loving basically all of friday lineup; frank turner, gaslight anthem, cribs, maccabees then libertines and arcade fire will actually make my life!
other highlights include blink, we are scientists, billy talent, gogol bordello, lcd soundsystem and lostprophets.
hoping i get to see them all between my shifts!

I'm Jamie 19 from Newcastle. Finishing 6th form in a few months and I'm taking a gap year to volunteer and do something different for a while. Hopefully Leeds will kick off my voluntary work. I've been 08/09 camped in orange both times and it was amazing. My group had the tent with a massive pokemon on it drinking VK's named after someone's surname, Anyone else want a tent set up this year?

So far I'm not bothered about the line up. Looking forward to the dance tent. I'd like to see Klaxons, foals, LCDS, Crystal castles, GNR. I hate to say it, but T in the park line up looks wicked.

Si, are you going to Newcastle or Northumbria? Oh, I'm going to Teesside in 2011 for Web Development.

I'm Jo, 21 from Manchester, in my last year of uni at Liverpool. This shall be my 4th year as a CAT at Leeds (and I'm also doing Latitude this year). I'm especially looking forward to Frank Turner, Gaslight Anthem, Billy Talent and NoFX along with a few others.

Jo, it's my first time as a CAT this year, what should I expect? How much graft do you do, and what do you do?

Rich_H posted this 31 March 2010

Hi guys, I am Rich, I'll be 23 by the time the festival comes round, and I am from the paradise known as Grimsby <_<. I graduate from Leeds University last year, but I am currently unemployed and looking for work, should hopefully have a start date on a job by the time I am at the festival!

This will be my first time as a CAT, I am going by myself too, but I am obviously excited about meeting new people. I have been to Leeds fest for the past 6 years and its like a second home!. I have volunteered this year as I don't know too many people going this year, and can't afford to spend the cash on the fest too, so I thought there would be no better way to enjoy the delights of West Yorkshire again!

I am a massive Biffy fan, so I am looking forward to see them (again), and if/when I get drunk I will no doubt be flashing my Biffy tattoo on my leg, haha. I am also looking forward to finally seeing Blink 182 if possible and generally enjoying the festival from yet another different perspective. I am already REALLY looking forward to it!

i'd say the amount of graft depends on shifts/days/campsites. if you work sunday night youre obviously more likely to be helping put fires out, if you work wednesday/thursday night you need to look out for thieves more because people have more money to be stolen at the start of the fest. you also need to be on the lookout for theives more in the quieter campsites.

most of the work though is just wandering around the site youre placed on, chatting to the punters, asking them to keep any fires in control, checking the size of fires if the fire tower radios down unsure if its acceptable, giving people directions, walking around with drunk people until they finally find their lost tent (or they give up and wander back to the bar) and reporting any dodgy stuff to security

its all pretty straight forward and simple, one of the biggest reasons cats are there is just so staff can be seen patrolling to deter trouble makers and thieves so as long as youre walking around youre doing your job

Hey i'm Georgie, i'll be 18 by the time of Leeds and it's my first festival nevermind my first time at Leeds or being a CAT so i need quite a bit of information if you'll provide it :)
Any tips you can suggest would be very helpful!
I know a few people who are also CATs but going in the hope to make lots of friends (which im sure will happen)! I'm a pretty down to earth girl so i'm easy to get along with!

I'm hoping to see libertines(!!), the cribs, maccabees, we are scientists, and any others i can get a glimpse of!

Hiya! I'm Alisha, 18 - although I'll be 19 on the last day of the festival :D - and a first year student at UCL, studying linguistics :)

I've been to V fest a couple of times before but never to any of the 'major' ones so I'm very excited! I'm also applying to work at Lattitude and Big Chill, as well as Leeds - it's going to be a summer full of wellies and festivl chic for me! I'm most excited about seein Biffy CLyro, blink, Paramore, The Libertines, Enter Shikari, Klaxons and You Me At Six, although I know I won't get to see all of them!

I'm bringing a coupld of friends with me too, although I'm very excited to meet new people! :)

Hi the names Dan 23 from outside Leeds! Self employed as a joiner, loving it. Same as Jojo, this will be my 4th year and doing Latitude this year. I usually work white campsite as CAT Area Supervisor. Same as Jo with the musical tastes really.

There will be plenty of old hands about to any new cats looking for advice. Also no doubt be a few party tents in the staff area, usually is hehe.

jojo posted this 02 April 2010

if you applied through uni does that mean youre a HAT?

Cool_Mum_Joolz posted this 03 April 2010

Hi all - I'm Julie or Joolz as you prefer, years old and from Sheffield, this will be my fifth year at Leeds and third at Latitude. Will be good to see you there JoJo!
I shall be spinning like a top on Friday and Saturday because I want to see all of the bands!! I'll probably offer to work Sunday evening shift because there are only two bands I'm bothered about and one of those, Mumford & Sons, is playng Latitude. It will be a shame to miss Gogol Bordello because they were fantastic two years ago but hey, you can't win 'em all [:)]

I \"HAT'd\" at latitude last year which isn't quite as varied as being a CAT - wish I'd been paid a £ for every time I told someone \"yes you CAN go up that path to the family area if you want to but I'd recommend this way\" as I waved a map at them while standing under the signpost . lol.

Paul85 posted this 03 April 2010

oops yes my bad yes indeed it is a HAT not a CAT, is there much difference though?

Cool_Mum_Joolz posted this 03 April 2010

Hi Paul - yes, they are quite different roles and affects \"behind the scenes\" stuff as well ;)

HAT's are more of an information service, so your interaction with the public is of a fairly transactional nature. CATs provide more hands-on assistance (at first) and patrol a given camping area so you get to \"know\" some of the campers.

Unless things have changed from previously, as a HAT at Leeds, you'll be camping with your uni' group in a separate compound from the HotBox CAT group - I don't think HotBox are running the HATs there (?). Whereas at Latitude, HotBox run both groups so we'll all camp together.

One of the supervisors will hopefully correct me if things are different this year ;)

Paul85 posted this 04 April 2010

Thanks for that, still sounds good, so the CATS and HATS dont work with each other?

MikeMorris posted this 05 April 2010

Hi, I'm Mike and I'm venturing up to Leeds for the first time.

I'm on a 'Cultural Exchange Visit' from Reading having been a CAT there for the last four years, and the last two at Latitude.

I keep being told that Leeds is better than Reading, so I've decided that the best way of finding out is to come and have a look for myself. I have a passport and am looking forward to going 'ooop North'.
