Hi Worthers!
I'm just about to confirm my place on PAAM, now that the lineup has been announced.
How old? Ancient. Last year I was staggering up the hill and some guys shouted out \"oldest person at Leeds\" (I am)I gave them the thumbs up and they all fell over laughing. :)
Coming from Sheffield, will have a place in the car if anyone wants one.

i feel like such an amateur, any tips from some of you more experienced CATs?

Bring wellys, an alarm clock, plenty of beer and a sense of humour!

If you see a campfire in the staff area when you're off shift, pull up a chair, bring a beer and join in!

Just enjoy it! Working with the CATs is awesome!!!!!!

Yeah wrap up warm for the night shift, no matter HOW warm it is during the day, the night is ALWAYS cold.

Oh some decent waterproofs are a must as well! The come in so handy, even if it's dry =D They keep you warm.

bags666 posted this 26 May 2009

and good comfy strong shoes cos u do alot of walking

My recommendation for a waterproof is to get a poncho!!!!!! You can get a decent poncho in hiking shops if you don't want one of those cheap binbag ones.

They're great because you can wear a thick jumper underneath, keep your arms inside and you don't feel wet. With normal waterproofs even if you're dry you have that annoying feeling when your wet coat arm brushes against your wet side. The only downfall of ponchos is they not great if you want to get your arms out to do stuff, but being a CAT most the time you'll just wander around a field talking to people anyway, so what if you look like a walking tent! Oh and my poncho covers me down to my knees, so only my shins get wet.

and if it rains, your chair can stay dry too

I love my poncho <3

hallo! im mark if i do catting this year it will be my 3rd year (though might be working for dc due to needing money lol)

i always find ducktape and ripties (plasticuffs) come in very handy if someone has broken their tent or the staff tent gets wet and need a tarp attatched to it lol.

as do waring boots (steel toecaps) as aposed to trainers or wellie as you get far less blisters and you dont have to worrie about things sticking in your feet

oh and something waterproof but thin as you'll be very acctive as a cat even in the rain so dont want to get too hot.

yeah steel toecaps all the way!!

RestricteD posted this 27 May 2009

Thick socks are a must if your wearing steel toe caps, cushioned heel ones are good. Expierence... hehe have to wear them all the time for work!

mark - s posted this 29 May 2009

yes i would ware a thin pair of socks then a thick pair then me boots, tip though dont leave boots in a fire if you go to sleep, i did last year at gatecrasher and the metal toecaps/anklebrace and sides in my boots got so hot i had to jump in a big puddle to cool me feet down :P

Amymeister posted this 29 May 2009

I just hope it doesn't rain like it did last year and then wellys and big waterproof boots won't be needed!!!

jojo posted this 29 May 2009

anyone know where i can get wide calf wellies that aren't rediculously expensive?

Amymeister posted this 30 May 2009

I wish I knew! I spent months last year hunting for wellys to fit my fat little stumps and my hunting proved fruitless!! I ended up with croc wellys which weren't cheap but pretty funky and look like spaceman boots. I think you can get cheap versions of them somewhere too. Not quite calf length but still they do the job!

jojo posted this 30 May 2009

i despise crocs though lol.
ive found some online but theyre all like £60+ :(N

There are a few on EBAY...

Just type \"wider calf wellies\" in the search field.....

jojo posted this 31 May 2009

theyre all half calf in my size though.

just found some on amazon though, just not sure which ones to get, the stormwell ones look a bit flimsy sould wise but i presume theyd be a better brand:

any opinions?
